On January 14, 1992, the Washington Capitals defeated the St. Louis Blues 6-1 at the St. Louis Arena in St. Louis.

Mike Ridley opened the scoring for Washington at 12:14 of the first period when he beat the Blues' Curtis Joseph. Kevin Hatcher assisted on Ridley's shorthanded goal. Jeff Brown tied it for St. Louis just 38 seconds later while the Blues were still on the power play. With just 13 seconds left in the period, Dmitri Khristich scored Washington's second shorthanded goal of the game. Sylvain Cote and Ridley assisted on the goal, Khristich's 22nd of the season. The Blues poured 13 shots on former St. Louis goaltender Mike Liut while the Caps responded with seven against Joseph.

Dale Hunter scored a power play goal at 7:31 of the second period to give the Capitals a 3-1 lead. Randy Burridge and Calle Johansson assisted on the goal, Hunter's 12th of the campaign. Each team had nine shots on goal in the middle period.

At 1:59 of the third, Washington's Dino Ciccarelli scored the first even-strength goal of the game to give the Caps a 4-1 lead. Hunter picked up the lone assist. Less than three minutes later, Ciccarelli returned the favor, picking up the lone assist on Hunter's second tally of the night. Todd Krygier closed out the scoring and made it 6-1 Caps with a power play goal at 13:55. John Druce and Cote assisted on Krygier's goal. The Capitals had 19 shots on goal to the Blues' six in the final period and outshot St. Louis 35-28 on the evening.

With two goals and an assist, Hunter was the game's first star. Ridley and Ciccarelli were the second and third stars, respectively, each with a goal and an assist.
