On January 28, 1984 the Capitals put an 8-0 pasting on the Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. The win came one night after the Caps beat Toronto 6-1 on Capital Centre ice.

Washington’s Craig Laughlin—playing against the team with which he would finish his NHL career in 1988-89—scored at 10:53 of the first period against Toronto netminder Mike Palmateer. Dave Christian and Doug Jarvis also beat Palmateer in the first period.

Laughlin scored his second of the game on a power play at 6:35 of the second. When Gaetan Duchesne scored less than two minutes later, Leafs coach Mike Nykoluk pulled Palmateer in favor of Rick St. Croix. Duchesne baptized St. Croix with his second goal of the game some six minutes later.

Bobby Gould and Rod Langway registered third period tallies for the Caps. Washington outshot the Leafs 30-24, the 11th straight game in which they outshot the opposition (a club record at the time).

After Rick Vaive scored for the Leafs (his 40th of the season) in the first period of the first game between the two teams, the Capitals came back with 14 unanswered goals over the next five-plus periods of hockey.
