Capitals Assign Kundratek and Orlov to Hershey

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have assigned defensemen Tomas Kundratek and Dmitry Orlov to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Kundratek, 23, has registered seven points (one goal, six assists) in 25 games with the Capitals this season, despite missing eight games due to injury. He ranks tied for eighth among rookie defensemen in scoring and has skated an average of 16:08 per game this season for Washington.

The 6’2”, 195-pound defenseman currently leads Hershey blueliners in goals (13) and points (26) while adding 13 assists. He recorded six points (two goals, four assists) during his current five-game point streak before his recall and ranks third in goals among AHL defensemen. Kundratek has already set career highs in goals, assists (tied) and points despite playing in just 41 games so far this season, and was named to the AHL Eastern Conference All-Star squad for the 2013 Dunkin' Donuts AHL All-Star Classic.

In 173 career AHL games, the Prerov, Czech Republic, native has compiled 63 points (27 goals, 36 assists) with Hartford, Connecticut and Hershey. Kundratek has appeared in 30 NHL games, all with Washington, and recorded one goal and six assists.

Orlov, 21, registered an assist and a plus-five rating in five games with Washington and has recorded 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) and 16 penalty minutes in 22 games with Hershey this season. He collected 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) and 18 penalty minutes in 60 games with the Capitals during his rookie season in 2011-12. Orlov finished the season ranked fourth in scoring among rookie defensemen despite finishing ranked 23rd in average ice time per game (16:52).

Orlov, a 6’0”, 210-pound defenseman from Novokuznetsk, Russia, was Washington’s second-round selection, 55th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He has registered 30 points (seven goals, 23 assists) in 56 career AHL games with Hershey and helped lead Team Russia to a gold medal at the 2011 World Junior Championships in Buffalo, recording nine points (one goal, eight assists) in seven games while being named to the tournament All-Star team.

In addition, Orlov represented Team Russia at the 2010 World Junior Championships and was one of Russia’s top three performers at the 2009 Under-18 World Championships.
