ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals alumni Craig Laughlin and Sylvain Cote visited Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School in Ashburn, Va., on April 22 for a Capitals Hockey School assembly.

Hockey School is a free program, designed to be both instructional and interactive, with the goal of exposing students to floor hockey while teaching proper technique. Joined by Capitals mascot Slapshot, Laughlin and Cote directed a floor hockey session in the school’s gymnasium with more than 300 fourth- through fifth-grade students.

During the assembly Laughlin and Cote participated in a question-and-answer session and led a skills demonstration. They guided students through drills focusing on stickhandling, passing and shooting prior to inviting students to demonstrate what they learned. The clinic concluded with students participating in a brief scrimmage joined by Laughlin and Cote as their teammates.

“We’re always happy to teach area children about the sport,” said Laughlin. “The program does a wonderful job of encouraging students to be active through hockey, and it’s great to see the kids’ enthusiasm for the game.”

Laughlin, a former Capitals right wing, appeared in 428 regular-season games with the team from 1982-83 to 1987-88. He currently serves as Capitals analyst for Comcast SportsNet. Cote, a former Capitals defenseman, appeared in 475 regular-season games with the team from 1991-92 to 1997-98.

Following the clinic, the Capitals donated a set of street hockey equipment to the school and provided each student with an autographed player card, a hockey 101 booklet and a squishy puck. Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School also received a Capitals Hockey School banner to display in their school gymnasium.

2013-14 marks the seventh consecutive year the Capitals have conducted their Hockey School program. The Capitals have hosted more than 70 clinics and reached more than 10,000 students in the past four years.
