Courage. It is a word that is synonymous with professional athletes and used freely to describe plays, effort and officials’ calls. “He gave a courageous effort right there,” or “it takes a lot of courage to make that kind of pass in this kind of situation,” are cliches echoed by coaches, broadcasters and fans game after game and year after year.
It is a fair description, but frequently the true meaning of the word is lost or forgotten, as it is lauded on athletes who are simply doing what they are supposed to do.
The Washington Capitals are doing their best to remind everyone what true courage is and are asking for your help. Through Courage Caps presented by Microsoft, the Capitals will raise funds to help the truly courageous men and women who protect and defend our country and their families.
During the upcoming season the Capitals will sell Courage Caps with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the USO of Metropolitan Washington (USO-Metro), a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is “serving those who serve and their families” in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia. It is through the generous financial support of individuals and organizations in the local community that USO-Metro is able to fulfill its mission.
Courage Caps and Courage T-shirts will be sold for $20 online at WashingtonCaps.com, at the Fan Gear store and stands throughout Verizon Center and at Capitals home games. There will also be a limited number of autographed Courage Caps and T-shirts available for sale at WashingtonCaps.com and at the community relations table located behind section 104 on the main concourse at Verizon Center. For $50 fans can purchase a Courage Cap or T-shirt signed by Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green, Mike Knuble or Alex Ovechkin; for $35, fans can purchase a Courage Cap or T-shirt signed by any other individual Capitals player.
With the help of more than 5,500 dedicated volunteers, USO-Metro provides programs and services for active duty troops and their families at the area's military hospitals, through its Mobile USO program; at six USO family support centers and four USO airport lounges.
Every program and service that USO-Metro provides is centered around its desire to give back to the men and women who sacrifice so much for our country. Whether it is bringing in a celebrity to brighten the day of a patient in the hospital or a moon bounce at Deployed Family Fun Day, USO-Metro’s goal is to boost the morale of the military community.
The brave men and women in the military display the ultimate meaning of the word courage. They risk their lives to protect ours and serve our country with valor. That is true courage.
You too can show your support of their courageous efforts and join the Capitals and Microsoft as they help to make a difference. All it takes is one Courage Cap or T-shirt to help a great cause.
