John Druce was a second-round pick, chosen 40th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1985 Entry1 Draft. He had played two seasons with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 34 goals and 70 points over two seasons.

Druce spent two years in the minors before having the opportunity to play with the Capitals in 1988-89. In 48 games, he had eight goals and seven assists. The next year he played in 45 games. It was the playoffs that year when Druce made a name for himself, scoring 14 goals and three assists for 17 points in just 15 games. That fantastic playoff production earned Druce a regular spot in the Caps lineup the following season, and in 80 games he popped in 22 goals and 36 assists for 58 points. He played in eleven playoff games that spring, but the magic was not the same as he produced just a single goal and an assist.

After one more season in Washington, Druce went to the Winnipeg Jets in 1992-93. He then moved on to the Los Angeles Kings, signing as a free agent, where he played for three years. Druce joined the Philadelphia Flyers late in the 1995-96 season when he was traded for the Kings' fourth-round draft pick in 1996. He was a part of the Flyers' team that advanced to the 1997 Stanley Cup finals against the Detroit Red Wings. After 23 games with the Flyers in 1997-98, Druce packed up and played two years in the German Elite League.
