On March 4, 1995, the Washington Capitals defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-1 in front of a throng of 16,210 at USAir Arena.

Dale Hunter's power-play goal gave Washington a 1-0 lead at 8:22 of the first period. Michal Pivonka and Calle Johansson assisted on Hunter's third goal of the season. Just over four minutes later, Pivonka netted another power-play marker - his fourth goal of the season - to give the Caps a 2-0 lead, John Slaney and Joe Juneau assisting. Paul DiPietro halved the lead for the Canadiens at 13:53 of the first period. The Capitals put 14 shots on Montreal's Patrick Roy in the first period. The Canadiens answered with eight against Washington netminder Jim Carey.

Keith Jones scored his sixth of the season at 6:02 of the middle frame to restore Washington's two-goal advantage. Johansson and Juneau assisted on Jones' goal. Peter Bondra netted an unassisted goal - his ninth of the season - at 16:23 of the second to push the Washington lead to 4-1. Montreal outshot the Capitals 14-6 in the second period.

Pivonka scored the lone goal of the third period and his second of the game at 18:24. Bondra and Joe Reekie collected the assists on the final Washington goal of the evening. Each team had seven shots on goal in the third period; Montreal led 29-27 in that department for the game.
