March 9On March 9, 1998, the Capitals beat the Calgary Flames by a 5-2 score in front of 12,011 fans at MCI Center.
The Capitals struck first when Peter Bondra scored his 38th of the season on the power play at 5:58 of the first period. Esa Tikkanen – playing in his first game with the Capitals – picked up the primary assist. Just 38 seconds later, Dale Hunter’s sixth goal of the campaign made it 2-0, Capitals. Calgary’s German Titov halved the Washington advantage with a goal at 11:54. The Capitals fired eight shots at Calgary netminder Rick Tabaracci and the Flames mustered six against Washington’s Bill Ranford.
Aaron Gavey tied the game for Calgary at 3:49 of the second period. Washington’s Calle Johansson scored on a power play – his 14th of the season – at 13:56 to give the Caps the lead once again. Tikkanen registered another assist on Johansson’s goal. The Caps outshot the Flames 14-11 in the middle frame.
Bondra scored his 39th at 3:21 of the third and Andrei Nikolishin netted his third of the season at 4:24. The Flames outshot the Caps 6-5 in the third but Washington held a 27-23 advantage on the evening.
