Slapshot at the NHL Mascot Meetings
Slapshot recently visited Newark, New Jersey as part of the NHL Mascot Summer Conference. Slapshot hung out with all his friends including NJ Devil from the New Jersey Devils, Gnash from the Nashville Predators, Howler from the Arizona Coyotes, SpartaCat from the Ottawa Senators, Stinger from the Columbus Blue Jackets, TommyHawk from the Chicago Blackhawks, Nordy from the Minnesota Wild, and Thunderbug from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The group spent a lot of time goofing around, but they also got down to business… They participated in a photo shoot in New Jersey, and then they traveled to the Big Apple where they entertained huge crowds of hockey fans in Times Square and at the NHL Store. Slapshot had a great time palling around with all his mascot buddies!

Slapshot’s Summer Fun At Army Navy Country Club
Slapshot and his good friend, G-Wiz, visited the Army Navy Country Club pool in Arlington last week to take advantage of the beautiful summer weather and visit with some big-time Caps fans. Slapshot and G-Wiz made a grand entrance by surprising the day campers and counselors by squirting them with water guns! They then organized a dance party and freeze dance competition. Kids were able to show off their dance moves, and Slapshot and G-Wiz strutted their stuff too!

After the dance party, the campers took turns in a pool basketball shooting competition. Lucky winners of all the contests received a Slapshot bobblehead and other cool prizes.

He’s been really busy posting photos, videos, news, and other cool stuff about the Caps! Last week Slapshot celebrated the 4th of July and Canada Day! A couple weeks ago he hosted a bunch of kids at Kettler for hockey camp… It was a ton of fun. At the beginning of summer he had a calendar shoot on the beach, and he took some video of it for you… So be sure to check that out. He also posted some great pictures from the Taste of Arlington where he met up with tons of young Caps fans just like you!
So, make sure to follow Slapshot’s Facebook page so you can get all the latest sights and soundsfrom Slapshot and all his friends!

Playoff Pep Rally
One of the cool things about being in the playoffs, is that the Caps host a playoff pep rally during each round so that schools can show us how they #RockTheRed.  The Round Two pep rally was held at Kent Gardens Elementary in McLean, VA.  Fifth and sixth graders from Kent Gardens got to take pictures with Slapshot, shoot on the giant inflatable shooting cage, practice stick handling, take shots on one of their teachers in full goalie gear, and play in a hockey scrimmage… Oh, and let’s not forget, they got to cheer loud and #RockTheRed with Slapshot and Caps alum, Paul Mulvey!  It was a great day for everyone involved.  Be sure to check out the video below.

Slapshot's Pregame Playoff Look

If you’ve been to any of the home Caps playoff games, you will have noticed that Slapshot is rocking a new “Braveheart” look pregame for the playoffs! As soon as the game is getting ready to start, Slapshot transforms into a true Caps warrior… Ready to battle hard in the playoffs! He paints his face blue and white, and he even puts on a Scottish kilt. Click on the link below to see him in action on the concourse, banging the drum in the crowd, and riding his segway on F Street before the game. Once the game starts, Slapshot turns red so that he can #RockTheRed with all the great Caps fans! So if you’re at the game on Thursday, make sure you get to your seats early and look for Slapshot beating the drum in a section near you!

Slapshot at the White House

On Monday, April 6 Slapshot was invited to the White House for the annual Easter Egg Roll. Slapshot participated in the Easter Egg Hunt, listened to President Obama read a story, and played lots of fun games as part of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign. Slapshot visited and took photos with a bunch of kids, and as you can imagine there were a lot of Caps fans there! He also got to hang out with the mascots from the Washington Kastles (tennis team), the racing presidents from the Washington Nationals, the cast of Sesame Street, and even the Power Rangers. Behind the Scenes with Slapshot
Caps Kids! We have an extra special treat for you today! We followed Slapshot around the Verizon Center at the game the other day… It was hard to keep up with him because he’s always running so fast all over the place, but we tried our best. As you can imagine, Slapshot always gets mobbed when he walks around the concourse, but he loves taking pictures with Caps fans… Especially you kids!

Slapshot showed us some really cool behind the scenes stuff including: the back hallways of the Verizon Center, riding his ATV on the ice pregame, limited edition Slapshot bobbleheads in the Team Store, hanging out with the Red Rockers, and much, much more.

Kids Day Recap

The Caps Kids Club hosted Kids Day on February 21 before the game against the New York Islanders. This fun event for deluxe kids club members allowed them to enter the arena one hour early with their family and friends to play games and enjoy other cool activities.

Kids were able to get their faces painted in Caps colors, get airbrush tattoos, make spirit signs, and win prizes playing tons of carnival games. A Winter Classic display allowed kids to touch and take pictures with different players' official equipment from the game including Alex Ovechkin’s skates, the stick that Troy Brouwer used to score the game winning goal, as well as a Winter Classic helmet, pants, and more.

Saturday was also Mascot day, so Slapshot invited a few of his friends to join in on the fun. Kids were able to challenge Slapshot’s mascots buddies to arm wrestling contests and get autographs. The Mascots also took on the mites during the second intermission… Unfortunately the mascots lost 3-0.

There was also an opportunity to get autographs from current Caps player Aaron Volpatti and Caps alumnus Errol Rausse.

Kids Day was a ton of fun, and we hope to see you soon at our next kids club event coming up soon!

Kids Club Question and Answer

Last month we asked you to submit questions for a Q&A with John Walton, the voice of the Capitals Radio Network. John calls the Play-By-Play for all Capitals games. We selected our favorite questions and John’s answers are below!

Q:  What inspired you to be a play by play radio announcer? (submitted by Bradley M.)

A:  I grew up in Minnesota, and loved watching games on TV and listening to games on the radio when I was a kid. I thought it would be the coolest job in the world to be able to go to hockey games. I still think that today, and I love what I get to do when I come to work every day.

Q:   What was the hardest/best part about coming from Hershey to the NHL? (submitted by Rachel B.)

A:  The best part about making it to the NHL is watching the best hockey players in the world. There's nothing better than watching NHL games. The hardest part about leaving Hershey was leaving all that chocolate behind. :)

Q:  What is it like traveling with the team on the road? (submitted by Greg R.)

A:  Traveling with the team is a blast. You get to see lots of great cities, and there's always a hockey game to watch everywhere we go. It's a great big world out there. I'm lucky I get to see a lot of it every season.

Caps' Radio Announcer, John Walton

May "Spot the Differences!" Contest Winner

In our May newsletter, we asked our Kids Club members to “Spot the Differences” between these two pictures of Capitals forward Jason Chimera.

The differences are:
1)    Laces on the right skate are purple instead of yellow
2)    Helmet is yellow and not a blue hockey helmet
3)    The puck was replaced with a baseball
4)    Number on the right arm is gone
5)    Middle star on the jersey is blue instead of white
6)    Hockey pants do not say Reebok

We had so many correct entries, that we had to randomly select a winner. Congratulations Elyse H. As our winner, she will receive a signed puck from May’s Kids Club Player of the Month, Jason Chimera!
