Anacostia Watershed Society
The Anacostia Watershed Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to cleaning the water, recovering the shores, and honoring the heritage of the Anacostia River and its watershed communities, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.  Founded in 1989, the Anacostia Watershed Society protects and restores the Anacostia River and its watershed communities by working together with businesses, governments, faith-based organizations and youth to create sustainable solutions to improve our communities and river. The Society’s vision is to make the Anacostia River and its tributaries swimmable and fishable for the health and enjoyment of everyone in the watershed communities.  The Anacostia Watershed Society has engaged and empowered thousands of adults and youth, from the District of Columbia and Maryland, in programs to achieve our mission and create a destination for all to enjoy. Over the past 25 years, the Anacostia Watershed Society has worked with more than 100,000 volunteers to rid the river of harmful toxins and trash and restore natural habitats for plants and animals. They have planted nearly 31,800 native trees and plants, cleaned up more than 1,146 tons of trash and debris and removed 56 acres of invasive plants from all along the watershed. The organization has also engaged and educated more than 30,450 students and their teachers through original programs such as RiverSmart Schools and Rice Rangers.
