BOSTON (AP) -Boston Bruins coach Dave Lewis is feeling so good that he's taking some gambles.
Glen Murray scored a power-play goal 2:06 into overtime to lift the Bruins to their season-high, fourth straight victory, 3-2 over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.
After Washington defenseman Bryan Muir was whistled for tripping 1:48 into OT, Lewis elected to go an unconventional route in putting four forwards on the ice.
"Play to win is, I guess, the way to frame it," Lewis said.
Murray was happy his coach elected to play all frontliners.
"Yeah, I like it," he said with a smile.
Murray gathered a loose puck along the left boards, cut to the slot area, and unloaded a rising wrist shot over goaltender Brent Johnson's right shoulder.
"I just knew it was in the slot. I think it was rolling," he said of the game-winner. "I just wanted to get it on goal."
Zdeno Chara and P.J. Axelsson scored for the Bruins, who have won four in a row for the first time since March 2004.
Jakub Klepis and Alexander Ovechkin had goals for the Capitals, who have lost a season-high three straight.
"Special teams ended up biting this time," Johnson said. "Glen Murray is the kind of guy who gets a chance, and he doesn't miss too many. He's been around the league a long time and he's known for getting some gritty points, and he did that pretty much all himself."
Tim Thomas, in his fourth consecutive start, made 27 saves for the Bruins. Johnson had 36 stops, including a pad save on Marco Sturm's penalty shot with 11:21 left in regulation.
"They had some chances and our goalie played terrific again," Washington coach Glen Hanlon said. "Overall, I thought it was a well-played game. We had our scoring chances so I thought it was a fairly even game."
Chara gave Boston a 2-1 lead 3:56 into the third period when he scored a power-play goal during a two-man advantage, but Ovechkin tied it with a man-advantage goal with 3:01 to play.
The Bruins nearly survived a two-man disadvantage, but Ovechkin beat Thomas with a slap shot from the left point with one second left on the second power play. The Capitals had the 5-on-3 for 70 seconds.
Sturm, hooked by Mike Green, attempted a low wrist shot that Johnson dropped to his knees to stop. Earlier, Johnson made a splendid glove save on Sturm.
It was the teams' second meeting in four days, with Boston posting a 3-2 shootout win at Washington on Wednesday.
The Bruins jumped ahead 1:09 in when Marc Savard broke in along left wing and centered a pass to Axelsson, who redirected a backhander behind Johnson.
The Capitals tied it 1-1 just under 6 minutes later on Klepis' first goal of the season. Klepis split the defensemen at the blue line and shifted from his backhand before firing a wrist shot between Thomas' pads. It was just his second career goal.
Notes: Capitals LW Richard Zednik played his second straight after missing six games with an upper body injury. ... Boston C Brad Boyes played his 100th NHL game. ... Patrice Bergeron had scored the winner in Boston's three previous games. ... Boston D Brad Stuart dazed Klepis with a crushing hit along the right board in the second period. ... It was the first of four games in six days for the Bruins, who had played the fewest games in the NHL before Saturday.
