TORONTO (AP) -To Alexander Ovechkin it was just another chance to score against the Toronto Maple Leafs. For five other Washington Capitals it was a night to finally score.

Ovechkin scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season Monday night and five Washington players got their first in the Capitals' 7-1 victory over Toronto.

Brian Sutherby, Matt Bradley, Jeff Schultz, Matt Pettinger and Boyd Gordon all scored their first goals of the season for the Capitals while center Michael Nylander had three assists.

"We played very well tonight, all four lines played well, everybody scored and our goalie played well," said Ovechkin, who has nine goals in as many career games against the Maple Leafs. "I think we deserved tonight's win."

Olaf Kolzig stopped 32 shots for Washington.

Alexei Ponikarovsky scored for the Maple Leafs, who have allowed an NHL-high 51 goals this season. They continued their poor play at home where they have won only three times in nine games (3-4-2). This was their second 7-1 loss at home, also getting routed by Carolina on Oct. 9.

"Just collectively, for some reason, we're very fragile at home," Leafs captain Mats Sundin said following the latest loss at Air Canada Centre.

"How do I explain it? I can't," Sundin said. "Just too many breakdowns all over the ice. ... We did a lot of good things on the road but it seems we're tight at home, we try to do too much."

Andrew Raycroft, replaced starting goalie Vesa Toskala after Washington's fourth goal.

Gordon, standing alone in front of the net, re-directed a pass from Bradley to make it 1-0 at 3:19. Ponikarvosky tied it 31 seconds later, only to see Pettinger give the Caps the lead for good at 5:26 when he flipped a rebound over Toskala on a power play.

Ovechkin made it 3-1 at 11:57 and Schultz skated into the slot untouched two minutes later for the goal that chased Toskala. His team outshot 13-3 to that point.

Bradley beat Raycroft with a slap shot while short-handed 8:57 into the second period to make it 5-1. Ovechkin made it 6-1 at 11:09 on the power play.

Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice criticized his players for trying to make too many difficult plays when the simpler ones were there instead.

"Clearly there's still difficulty in accepting to play a simple game," Maurice said. "We just continued to try and make plays that weren't there."

Sundin was succinct.

"If we're going to be a playoff team we need to win at home," he said.

Notes: Caps captain Chris Clark sustained a severely lacerated left ear when he was struck by a shot by Ovechkin last Friday night. Star LW Alexander Semin is day-to-day after aggravating his sprained right ankle against St. Louis on Saturday. D Tom Poti (groin) was also out ... F Kyle Wellwood (groin), C Darcy Tucker (knee), D Carlo Colaiacovo (knee) and D Bryan McCabe (groin) were out for the Maple Leafs.
